In Maryland, ESOL 35% of ELL population is level 4 and up. Migration Policy Institute released a report in 2018. This report demonstrates that 60% of the 5th graders were proficient and advanced in PARCC. Unfortunately, only 11% of ESOL students get to be proficient& advanced. As ESOL teachers, we all know the fact that moving higher level ESOL students and supporting them in their content area is a lot more difficult than supporting lower level students. What should we do different to make our higher-level ELLs move forward?” The answer might be Close Reading.
