Well-designed performance-based assessments, both formative and summative, can serve as ability milestones that guide learners towards autonomy. Presenters will use sample assessments to demonstrate differences in approach and format for non-standardized assessments. Explanations will distinguish evaluation of mastery, proficiency / competence, recognition, and growth as aspects of students’ language acquisition. Principles will be illustrated by comparing and contrasting self-created listening and grammar assessment tools at all levels. Backwards design methods will also be discussed.
