The ability to critically engage with diverse cultures and divergent perspectives is vital in the 21st century. This workshop will discuss methods for teaching about culture in the TESOL classroom. The presenter will model teaching strategies that help students develop intercultural communicative competence and global citizenship. Participants will reflect upon they ways they have taught about culture in the past, will identify potential areas for growth, and will return to their classrooms with fresh ideas to help their students become curious, engaged, conscientious global citizens.
Tabitha Kidwell is a language teacher and teacher educator interested in the role of culture in language teaching. She is a faculty member in the TESOL program at American University, and has taught languages and trained teachers on five continents.
