We will describe a program focused on research and present the findings of a qualitative study. The study showed that newcomer high schoolers had complex ideas about writing/composing and that their perceptions shifted as they were afforded to utilize their full semiotic-linguistic repertoires and explore issues of their interest. The study findings may extend what counts as literacy and prompt to education stakeholders to collaborate in pro of creating opportunities for immigrant youth to leverage their available semiotic resources and their personal interests and experiences.
