First we’ll explain the importance of direct, coherent tier 2 vocabulary instruction. We’ll share instructional activities: a warm-up where students use context clues to determine the meaning of new words, context-embedded vocabulary instruction, and a differentiated vocabulary chart for teaching the highest-priority tier 2 words. We’ll show how to use analyzemywriting.com and Word to count the frequency of tier 2 words in texts, and how to create a survey to assess which words students already know, to select target vocabulary. Last, participants will create their own vocabulary chart.
