To move beyond the five-paragraph essay, college-level L2 writers must understand rhetorical situation. How can we teach these abstract concepts in a way that is digestible and practical? Enter the discourses in which students are already prolific composers: social media. By giving them the framework to understand their online communication, we can guide them to construct a parallel understanding of academic discourse. The presenter introduces easy-to-implement activities (with assessment tips) to guide students in building genre awareness and tailoring their writing to rhetorical situations.
